- Collection Development which is done in collaboration with faculty and librarians;
- Evaluation of materials that is done before acquisition; and
- Weeding and replacement recommendations.
Although selection may involve subject librarians, the Technical Services Department provides bibliographic verification and cost analysis.
Acquisition of Library Materials
In this unit, services provided involve:
- Ordering books, journals, databases, and multimedia resources;
- Processing invoices and payment;,
- Maintaining acquisition records;
- Managing gifts and exchange materials; and
- Vendor communication and performance monitoring.
Cataloguing and Classification
In the Ifedayo Oladapo Library, Cataloguing and Classification is one of the most critical responsibilities of the Technical Services Department. Cataloguing involves creating bibliographic records, assigning subject headings and inputting metadata into the Integrated Library System (ILS). While, Classification in EKSU involves: assigning call numbers using Library of Congress Classification (LCC) Scheme. The processes ensure materials are systematically arranged for easy retrieval.
Physical Processing of the Library Materials.
After cataloguing the materials, the resources undergo physical preparation like:
- Labelling (call number labels)
- Barcoding
- Stamping (ownership marks)
- Covering and binding
- Security tagging
These prepare materials for shelving and circulation.

- lamination of papers and documents like certificates and identity cards for the individuals within the university community and beyond
- binding of students’ projects, theses and dissertations
